[HowTo] 1.0 | Install a web server under debian

CONTENT_BY

After many years using web servers under debian, I decided to write a HowTo for thoses who would need that.

  • This howto was done with a kimsufi server from OVH.
  • Installed system: Debian 4.0 Etch Stable 64 bit
  • Kernel: 2.6.24.5-grs (OVH)

This tuto may be useful for people who have or want to get a kimsufi, so especialy french people I think. At this time, I've just ordered the kimsufi, and I want to configure it to handle web services (apache php mysql, bind and ftp services).

My HowTo is parted in 7 parts:

  1. Connect to the server
  2. Customize the shell
  3. Install Apache
  4. Install Apache modules
  5. Install Bind
  6. Install an FTP server
  7. Install MySQL

It's my personnal point of view. It works well, but there may be differences depending of your debian version.

If you're owning a Kimsufi server (or any other OVH server), take care to choose a Debian distribution with nothing else installed (no webmin, no plesk...). The aim is to have an installation as light as possible. Everything can be done in console mode and easily.

So. At the begining, you have nothing on your server. Only openSSH installed and a root account to log in. Nothing else.

Let's configure that together in part 1: Connect to the server
